Sylvia Schwenk
In silence and movement you can show the reflection of people, 2011
Sylvia was invited to create this new work of participatory performance as part of ‘Art Month 2011’.
The project, which takes it's name from a quote by the French mime Marcel Marceau was presented in a real life context in front of the construction site at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The performers became tradesmen - dressed in yellow overalls, yellow hardhats and black boots, equipped with glass suckers - moving sheets of pretend glass from the front of the MCA to the edge of Sydney Harbour's Circular Quay and back. During the performance some spectators started polishing the ‘glass’, others ran through sheets of ‘glass’ smashing them into shards, while others started carrying their own sheets of ‘glass’.
These performances are re-presented as a series of photographs, two single channel videos with sound, and an installation work.
